Love in the Lost Cities is a big thing. It impacts many elves in many ways, such as changing their last names for some, such as Della, and even changing their social status. This is a big thing in the Lost Cities, as ability and status could mean everything to one family and the people around them.
Let’s take a look at some of the families and people who have risked everything to be with the ones they truly love- and how it has impacted them.
Kesler and Juline Dizznee
Kesler and Juline are the perfect example of true love. Kesler, being Talentless, could only be matched with others of the same type- while Juline, a Froster, would never be matched with those who were Talentless, such as Kesler. But so what? It didn’t matter to them. They defied all odds to show their love for each other, and didn’t care about how they would be judged by society. They went on to have four kids- Dex, Lex, Bex and Rex.
Of course, this came with many banes. As Edaline mentions, her parents were shocked when Kesler asked for Juline’s hand in marriage, and even joked that Kesler was not good enough. Of course, they didn’t mean it that way, but it doesn’t mean that those words didn’t have a profound impact on Kesler. In addition, for Kesler to show Juline his love, they had to spend two full years apart as Kesler couldn’t take the Elite Levels while Juline was doing so. Despite this, their relationship never faltered. It even proved to be useful, as it taught them resilience, which would later be passed on to their children.
Juline marrying Kesler would also mean that they would face much scorn from society. They gave everything up to be with each other, including their respect from others. Once they were hailed a bad match, their life just spiralled downhill into a seemingly bottomless abyss. Dex even said that people expected him to get a lame ability, or even no ability, due to his family’s background. According to Dex, Kesler whooped with joy when he found out that Dex was a Technopath, he was so happy.
“They’d expect nothing less from a bad match!” -Vika Heks, Keeper
Jolie Ruewen and Brant
This is possibly one of the weirdest pairings ever. Jolie had an ability and Brant- well, he was a Pyrokinetic and he had to be Talentless to protect himself from scorn. Jolie knew. But she didn’t really care, did she? She knew loving Brant would make them a bad match, but for true love, she was willing to stoop to that level. They… well, they were really happy together. For those who rebut with the fact that Brant is emotionless and doesn’t love anyone, talk about the scene in Everblaze when Sophie fights against Brant. Brant hesitates killing Sophie with Everblaze, because Sophie reminded him of Jolie. That’s how much they truly loved each other, that not only were they willing to lower their social status, they also remembered each other in others after them.
Even when Jolie knew Brant was doing something against her and he was part of the Neverseen, she didn’t care. True love blinded her, and caused her to defend Brant. She wrote in her journal, Reflections, that he only did it because he had nowhere to go and no one to trust anymore. She knew that he was going to hurt her, but she risked her life to talk sense into him. In the end, she perished in the fire that Brant set, but she would always love Brant.

In conclusion, elves value love with each other, so much so that they are willing to endure scorn and discrimination from the rest of the world to be with the ones they truly love. Matchmaking may exist, and though there are some who truly believe in it, some elves are willing to make the sacrifice of a bad match, even though it may stay with them forever.
